Get Rich or Die Trying

So Eminem surprised us with the 8^th Mile.  Turns out he’s a pretty good actor and he didn’t completely embarrass himself in the infamous music to moviestar cross-over at which so many celebrities fail.  But what about this new 50 Cent movie Get Rich or Die Trying?  As much as I love 50 and his maximum gangstaness, I think this film is going to suck.  First of all, who names a movie after an old and, frankly, overplayed album.  It seems to be saying, “Hey my last album might not have been as hot as you expected, but remember my first album.  Here, I’ll name a movie after it so you’ll never be able to forget that I was cool once.”  Secondly, I’m uncomfortable with the fact that suddenly “50 Cent” is only a middle name and now we’re supposed to call him Curtis Jackson.  How un-badass is that!  Anyway, I haven’t seen the film yet, but my general vibe of this whole thing is TRAIN WRECK.  Any thoughts?  Anyone seen a bootleg?

Bomb the System

  Bomb The System is out on DVD as of  October 11, 2005. For those of you who are out of the loop, this is a full feature length film about the notorious graffiti art of New York Cityin the 80’s.

Shopgirl

I don't know about you but I love Jason Schwartzman! And guess what! He's going to be starring in a new movie called Shopgirl (also starring Claire Danes and Steve Martin). Basically it's sort of a love story, Mirabelle (Claire Danes) falls in love with Ray (Steve Martin), love for them seems to fade and she wonders if she should take a chance on Jeremy (Jason Schwartzman) a "struggling musician". I know the description is kind of vague, but any movie with Jason in it has to be hilarious! Check out the official website for more info!

Thumbsucker

So I’m at the movies the other day (I went to see The Baxter, which I highly recommend!) and I saw a preview for this movie call Thumbsucker and it looks awesome! It’s about this kid Justin who is 17 and still sucks his thumb. So he gets hypnotized and stops sucking his thumb, but he still doesn’t feel “normal” and decides to try all the things that other “normal” kids his age do such as smoke pot and have sex. In the end he realizes out that there’s no such thing as “normal”. It comes out today so go and see it!

Wallace and Gromit are back!

Remember Wallace and Gromit?? Well they’re back with a movie called The Curse of the Were-Rabbit; a comedy that involves a giant vegetable competition and a “vegetable ravaging beast”. It sounds hilarious and I’m sure it will be so be sure to go and see it when it comes out October 7.

Experimental Films

Okay so this film is not brand new, it came out in 2001, but I just recently saw it for the first time and I really enjoyed it. Mulholland Drive is an experimental film so don’t try and think about the plot in a totally logical way. You’ll probably want to see it twice to try and put the pieces together, but you won’t be able to (at least I couldn’t). Oh, and brace yourself, it’s 146 minutes long!

A Classic Throw Back

  Luis Bunel is the founder of Surrealist cinema.  He believed in "revolution brought by scandal" and it shows through with his controversial films.  The man is a classic and his work still shines brightly today, like a beacon of the surreal.  Most film students will know Luis Bunel and his films from Un Chien Andalou with Salvador Dali to The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, which I just saw for the first time a few weeks ago.

For those of you who have not seen The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, you have to netflix it ASAP. It is beautifully put together with comedy, controversy and cinematography.
