Back in 2001, MTV needed some new art for their Times Square-located TRL studios. Sean Bono stepped up and created Art Battles, a contest for up and coming artists to take their skills to the MTV logo. The contest, which originally began in a small lot on 45 E. Houston is back, and this year was taken to the roof-deck of the MTV studios where a group of talented artists were given 2 hours to work side-by-side in front of a live audience to paint their masterpieces. Eight finalists were chosen, Concep, Nick Poe, Leif McIlwaine, Martina Kubinyi, Ben Angotti, Brian Ermanski, Kevin Ragnott and Megan Whitman, and their art has been reproduced onto the shades to the legendary TRL building high above Broadway. Thing is, MTV only needs one. And the winner must be chosen, in true MTV style, by it’s viewers. Voting’s live and can be done up to 5pm ET on June 8th—and the winner will be revealed June 11 @ 3:30 pm on TRL. The competition’s stiff, so do your part in supporting art that is both raw and inspired, the heart of the stuff on the streets, and now thanks to MTV, hanging in Times Square.
Thanks for posting a blog about us!
We have been and will continue to do many shows around the NYC area. The purpose is two-fold to me to challenge the artist by taking them out of the comfort of their studios, and put them on stage in competition. Secondly it is to give emerging artists some needed exposure. The shows are far more entertaining than you might imagine, with notable MC's, musicians and street performers to supplement the artists painting live.
Thanks again!
