Earthbound Radio

With terrestrial radio in decline and satellite radio surrounded by hype, it's refreshing to see people keepin' it real as well as free. Earthbound Radio is the "Official San Diego Underground Hiphop Radio Station" delivered via live internet broadcasting, but to me it's a lot more than that. Earthbound was started by one of my good high school friends from San Diego, and it's great to see how he took his passion for hip-hop music and channeled that energy into building something from nothing. Earthbound broadcasts audio from its very own studio 24/7 and anyone can tune in using Windows Media, iTunes, or Winamp. Further proof of the seriousness is in the daily live mixshows. For example, every Monday you can tune in from 8:30pm-12midnight for the Armory Massive show that features nine DJs performing live along with host CROS1. I just can't say enough about Earthbound, so just check out the website and live audio feeds for yourself. You will not be disappointed.

Flavorpill Sundance

Fort Minor

Fort Minor is a brand new Hip-Hop group started by Mike Shinoda, The emcee of Linkin Park . The debut album, entitled "The Rising Tied" features some of rap's most renowned artists, such as: Common, Black Thought, Lupe Fiasco, and Latin Percussionist Bobo from Cypress Hill. Then, adding executive producer Jay-Z into the mix, you know this album was gonna be big. The album itself was released November 22th of last year and can now be purchased on iTunes and wherever music CD's are sold. Before the album dropped, they released a dope mixtape with 16 original tracks free to download featuring the vocal stylings of Juelz Santana and was mixed by DJ Green Lantern. – After the success of the inaugural live digital design tournament in November, 2005, CUT&PASTE is ready to take live art back to the drawing board.  CUT&PASTE is proud to present Travis Millard and Tristan Eaton vs. David Ellis and Kenji Hirata (from The Barnstormers) in CUT&PASTE’s first Live Art Jam on February 4^th at the Supper Club at

240 West 47^th St., between Broadway and 8^th Ave Doors will open at 11 pm. 

“CUT&PASTE is not just live, competitive digital design, it’s also about bringing great art together with live audiences in a party setting.  We see the artists feeding off the energy of the crowd and the DJs, like our last event,” said John Fiorelli of the CUT&PASTE crew.   

“For this event, we’re going totally non-digital,” said Justin Kim, also of the CUT&PASTE crew.  “And we’re excited to be working with Travis Millard, the Barnstormers, and Tristan Eaton, who was a judge at our digital design tournament.  All of these guys know how to push boundaries—I’m excited to see what’s going to happen,” he added. 

Troy Denning will also be giving a live tattoo demonstration on stage.  Beats will be provided by DJ Spinna, Rich Medina, and Tyler Askew (of Rude Movements),. 

CUT&PASTE

The CUT&PASTE crew is Justin Kim, John Fiorelli, James Kim, Otto Lai, Henry Lai, and Jeremy Greenfield.  CUT&PASTE strives to bring fresh art events to the intimate, party atmosphere of a club setting.  Seeing the final product is only half of the fun.  They want to bring the process, the other half, closer to the audience.  By breaking some of the barriers between artist and audience they hope to build a new paradigm for the creation of art while simultaneously engendering a community.  Keeping it fresh is also on the memo. 

MAVI: ETERNAL DOUBLE HAPPINESS

Tronic (www.tronicstudio.com) directed the short film Eternal Double Happiness using curator Sebastien Agneessen¹s (www.formavision.info) Mavi installation as both a backdrop and inspiration for the piece. The protagonist, dressed in the beautiful and whimsical clothes of As Four and Ideologue, explores this world of magical realism that literally comes to life before her eyes. Using a hybrid of live action and animation, her presence triggers the plants and insects to commence a fantastical dance around her. This alternative form of branding opens up new forms of communication.

Vitalic NYC

Vitalic, the innovative French dance DJ will be spinning at Don Hill’s in NYC on January 13^th.  He’s been compared to such greats as Aphex Twin and Daft Punk (and many say he’s even better).  Breaking down the barriers between scenes, Vitalic tries to be objective about musical genres so that his sound remains unrestrained, intermixing hip-hop, techno and rock.  We may as well call his music eclectronic.  His latest album, entitled OK Cowboy, has been rated one of 2005’s top 20 albums by Pitch Fork Media.  Check out their review, and then dance your pants off at the show!

The Urban Arts brand occasionally does in-house design under the name Black Label. The designs usually encompass obscure and alluding content sometimes even satirical, like in this case. Urban Arts Black Label Viking Quest shirt, now at Karmaloop. The guys over at Urban Arts are referencing the fictional show often times mentioned on the HBO series Entourage. What’s interesting about the shirt is that it represents a fictitious show, yet this Black Label design was made to look as if the Viking Quest show did in fact exist and would be sold as a mall shirt. It has an extremely cheesy and white trash suburban mall aesthetic. So all this adjectives aren’t positive;  cool graphic tees are mainstream thus too cool for cool is where is at… CHEESY JUXTAPOSITION, GOLDEN!!!

Obie Trice

“They didn’t take the bullet out my head.  It didn’t penetrate my skull or nothing, but they didn’t want to go inside my head and mess with the blood vessels,” said Obie Trice, referring to the shot that was successfully fired at him by a mysterious and apparently angry gunman last Saturday.  I don’t have to tell you that it’s becoming the hot thing for our hip-hop celebs to look more like swiss cheese than artists, but how far can this go?  My prediction is that bullets are going to become the new ice. How gangsta is that?  I can’t get enough of the music, but come on guys!  Let’s stop this whole thing before you look like a sprinkler ever time you take a sip of Hennessy.
